Software trials are an essential part of our research and validation process. Such interactions offer valuable insights into the challenges faced by educational institutions today and enable us to build the right products. Cognosketch, LLC seeks to be fully engaged with participating schools and education centers in our effort to modernize educational assessments and develop learning and remedial aids.

Background

Perception and reproduction of visual stimuli is a major part of learning, particularly in elementary education. Interpreting and copying visual information contributes to the ability to store and recall visual representations. Visual cognitive abilities vary across individuals, and this is especially true in children, as they understand and learn differently based on their respective abilities to perceive and internalize visual stimuli.

Several neuro-developmental conditions known today are related to visual perceptual, motor and neuropsychological integration, and related problem-solving functions, which if left unchecked, can lead to failure at school as characterized by challenges in one’s ability to read and comprehend written content and/or solve problems that require visual-spatial interpretation. Timely diagnosis of such conditions is critical to provide early and effective intervention to ensure long-term success in school, and later in career.

Product Information

Our product, Cognosketch Assess is a digital assessment that measures and analyses visual, motor, and neuropsychological integration and offers significant technological and cost advantages over paper-based tests that are in use today.

Software Trial

A software trial is intended for determining usability and basic functioning of the product, and will be offered free of cost to participating schools/ education centers for a period of one month. Students participating in this research are preferably be a diverse group that represents the general population found in the most current US population data.

The students will be asked to take a Visual-motor, Visual-perceptual Integration assessment on an iPad device using a stylus. An adult will provide limited oversight and technical assistance during the assessment if necessary. The following procedure will be followed to perform a software trial in a school / education center –

1. The Cognosketch Assess digital app is installed and configured on an iPad device by school staff. If the school does not have access to an iPad, a device may be loaned to the school for the duration of the trial depending on the location of the school.

2. Student-specific information, optionally filled by parents, will be requested. This information includes – Age, Handiness (dexterity), Ethnicity, and any known disabilities. No personal data such as Date of Birth, Address, contact information, SSN, etc. will be requested.

3. Participating students will take turns using the device(s) to complete the assessment in a quiet environment free of distractions.

4. As a part of the assessment, a student will be presented with a set of visual-forms and will be asked to sketch each presented visual form on the device using a stylus. During the assessment, the device will make several mathematical measurements and record the data on the device. Assessments usually take 10-12 minutes per student.

5. The visual forms can also be presented to students on paper to accommodate potential physical disabilities.

6. An adult staff member or volunteer must be present to provide limited supervision and oversight during the assessment.

7. The school/educational institute will be provided with a confidential report or assessment summary for each participating student.

8. A follow-up assessment may be arranged upon request for students requiring relevant intervention.

Cognosketch, LLC is aware of and is committed to adhering to IRB guidelines during any interaction with students or staff for this research.
