Before starting an assessment
Ensure that you have assessments available for use in your account by clicking the sync button.
As a part of the assessment, students are presented with a series of visual forms, which they comprehend and reproduce by drawing them on a blank canvas. The assessment is administered on a digital tablet device like an iPad using a stylus (see #3 in the guidelines below).
The Cognosketch Assessment must be administered by an adult (counselor, teacher or volunteer). The following guidelines are provided for administration of the assessment –
- A quiet place free of distractions should be chosen to administer the test.
- The student’s chair and table should be comfortable enough for a drawing/sketching exercise.
- Ensure that the student can rest their hand comfortably on the table and are able to write normally.
- Usage of an electronic stylus like an iPencil is recommended. However, if a student finds it hard to hold or write using an electronic stylus, they should be given the option of using a non-electronic stylus. Ask the student to try holding both and use the option they are most comfortable with.
- Help the student relax by telling them – they will be performing a few fun drawings on an iPad.
- Like in a video game, the farther one gets, the more one would need to think through a task when completing it.
- The student can choose to skip tasks.
- The student can choose to retry a task any number of times.
- Familiarize the student with the app – specifically, tell them what the buttons CANCEL, RESET (Retry Task or Technical Fault), SHOW IMAGE and DONE on the drawing canvas screen do.
Start an assessment session
When you click the “START ASSESSMENT” button, you will navigate to the Task List screen where you will be presented with a form to intake the test subject’s information at the time of the test. This includes –
- Subject ID – An identification code (e.g., student ID). You may use an arbitrary string of length 8-25 letters and numbers that helps you identify the subject. For e.g., the last and first name, separated by a hyphen may be used.
- Age – Age of the subject between 3 and 99 years.
- Gender – Male/Female/Other
- Handiness – Right/Left/Ambidextrous
- Input Mode – Finger/Stylus/Electronic pen
The subject’s ID is only used for creating the report. We do not store or use this information.
Age, Gender and Handiness are not currently used in our computations, but will be used in future for more fine-grained evaluation.
Task List Screen
The testing center name and student information will be visible on the screen at the top of the task list.
A list of tests with a preview of the visual form will be visible.
Ask the student to proceed with clicking each of the items in the list in a sequential manner.
Upon clicking on a task, the student will be presented with a drawing canvas screen with a popup showing a magnified view of the visual form.
A finished task is marked in green and cannot be reattempted after clicking on DONE in the drawing screen. The administrator can view the student’s work and the color coded versions of the work generated by the application by clicking on the “View Test Data” link on a finished task.
Drawing Canvas Screen
The visual design tasks in the task list screen are of increasing complexity. Individuals taking the assessment process these designs and reproduce them by drawing them on the canvas screen.
Upon clicking on a task, you will be presented with a drawing canvas screen with a popup showing a magnified view of the visual form.
Detailed information on the controls on the drawing canvas screen can be accessed on the link below –
Finish Assessment
When all tasks are complete, clicking on the “FINISH” button on the top right corner of the Task List Screen will end the assessment session, and you will navigate back to the main screen.
